Nah, I'd be a Christian Jewish Proselyte. Then I'd have all my bases covered. :-)

Christianity on the threat of DEATH..
by GetBusyLiving inif someone held a gun to your head and threatened to blow your brains out unless you worshiped jesus and went to church, which christian church would you choose?
no pansy churches like the unitarians though.
it has to be a fundamentalist denomination.

I surmise that any who say "I'd take the bullet" are using verbiage that is not without a significant percentage of fecal material. :)

It cannot be denied
by logansrun inimagine in your mind any "evil" person: rapist, murderer, theif, addict, terrorist...etc.
now, if you were born with that exact dna, had that same brain chemistry and went through the same enviornmental stimuli and life experiences as they did, you would do the exact same "evil" things.
we only think we are "free.

But what's the "we"? If, as I believe, we are entirely natural entities then we behave exactly as the chemistry of our brains at a particular moment dictates that we behave. There's no extra person to override that. If, on the other hand, there is a "ghost in the machine", a soul if you will, then on what basis does that soul make decisions? Does it make them based on its own nature and experiences, in which case we've just moved the problem back a level? Or does it make completely free choices in which case its behaviour is uncaused and therefore random?
Are you not arguing between two versions of nearly the same thing? Does it matter if our conscious power is brain chemistry or a "ghost in the machine?" We cannot deny that we have the ability to live our lives many different ways. In the end, why should we even care if our conscious thoughts are chemical? Seems similar to arguing whether I've been here an hour or 60 minutes (I've been here about 3 minutes actually ).

As another pointed out, they're not mutually exclusive. I'm double majoring with a BA in Math and English, and they're much more related than many folks realize. Still, I think I know what you're saying. You're wanting to focus some energy on an endeavor that does not have to follow a set path or reach a predetermined outcome, no?

What's Your View of Spanking (Children)?
by minimus inhave you done it?
would you still?
is it ever acceptable?

Also, I believe punishiment should be taylor fit for each child. Some children will not respond well to corporal punishment--some will. We all have different personalities, and we all respond to different things.

Aslap on the hand or bum is not, in my mind , necessarily wrong but it may be against the law.
Ha ha, you must not be from Arkansas. Corporal punishment is still practiced in most public schools here. Like any punishment, there is a right and wrong way to do it. Child abuse depends more on the parent than the mode of punishment used. I was spanked as a child, and I did NOT grow up to be a violent person. When I was spanked, I knew damned good and well why I was being spanked, and I never associated it with violence. To say that spanking always breeds violence is a rather narow-minded and arrogant view to take. I've been in a total of 3 physical fights in my life--all started by the other guy, and all in jr. high school.

On a macro level, the Witnesses are pretty harmless
by logansrun inwarning: this post may be damaging to your biases.. it seems to me that the "danger" the witnesses pose to larger society is, well, pretty damn small.
just think about it: the witnesses are almost not involved in politics at all, except the occassional "freedom of religion and speech" issues they take to various courts, issues i am happy to support the witnesses in, even if i strongly disagree with their beliefs.
you will not see jws supporting banning abortions or gay marriages or a whole host of other civil liberties and freedoms that evangelicals rally around like the village people searching for frankenstein's monster.

Why don't you give me a list of things specific to being a JW that cannot be found outside their own closed system?
So, something must be unique to the organization before it can be good? I guess then, by this standard, nothing is good, since no one has a monopoly on any one kind of goodness.

Confession, your arguments make perfect sense. What is wrong with saying that mafia hitment and sex slave traders have little effect on the macro level? They don't. You touch on the greatest gripe I have, though--generalizations. Most sentences (noticed I said "most" lol) that starts with "all ______" are "____" are usually a narrowly-focused opinion based on emotional prejudices that blind their adherents to much truth. When we get to the basics, many here say the Witnesses are a mind controlling cult. However, I would venture to say there exist as many or more ex-JW as JW folks. We can see then, that saying they're a mind-controlling cult would be a bit simplistic, as so many leave--their minds obviously weren't controlled.
My opinion of JW's is that they do perform some good and some bad like any religion. However, being out of the mainstream with an eliteist attitude, they tend to draw some wierd ones from the general population.
One thing that gets me is the downright hatred for JW's I see so much of here. If we were to listen to these folks, JWs are a group that have no individuality, cannot think through anything, cannot express opinons, disown their young after raping them, and are generally stupid. Ironically, nearly all who express such opinons were once JW's themselves. I guess they must feel some serious self-hatred then, if they thought of themselves as being as I just described.
